The game has a temperature meter and when it goes over a certain threshold, your character becomes overheated and sweat literally rolls down the camera. Sand dunes stretch out toward the horizon with the burning sun taunting you as the sweat pours down your face. For one, there are massive expanses of nothing. Since Starsand takes place in a desert, it’s a little different than many similar games. ![]() This, of course, is based around following a series of guided tasks that require you to craft new items and find food and water. After entering a small building to take shelter from a sandstorm, you find yourself in a completely unknown location and have to start moving if you wants to stay alive. You were running a desert marathon, but ended up separated. ![]() The story setup in Starsand is currently delivered by a bit of text over a black screen. But the question stands: is Starsand worth it in Early Access? Prison in the Desert The game is set to stay in early access until at least Summer of 2022, and it’ll receive a full storyline, as well as more areas and gameplay attributes. It’s not exactly the first desert survival game, but it’s going to pique the curiosity of some folks all the same. Well, there’s more to it, but that’s mainly accurate. What separates it is that, yup, it’s in a desert. ![]() Starsand is a brand new survival game entering Early Access. You find yourself in a harsh environment and have no choice but to scavenge for resources to increase your chances of staying alive. Crafting-focused survival games are a dime a dozen. I didn’t see any sandworms in my time with the demo, but they’re in there somewhere, along with other dangers like packs of hyenas, massive gators, and giant centipede-lookin’ things. He is now my friend, and I’m glad, because just look at his sweet, goofy face. There were also some scorpions scuttling around, and when another sandstorm blew in and almost knocked over the tiny hut I’d been building, some frightened camels and gazelles appeared at my oasis. After discovering an oasis with drinkable water and trees bearing fruit like dates and bananas, I killed a frog with my axe and roasted it over a fire. This might not be Earth but there are familiar creatures in Starsand. Clearly that sandstorm whisked you off to some other planet, or dimension, or timeline, or… who knows what? Medieval Starsand Bundle When the sun sets you’ll notice two moons in the sky, and neither look like the moon we know and love. I tried out the free demo and it’s pretty tough-the sun beats down mercilessly which quickly starts damaging your character, and it looks for all the world like there’s nothing around you but endless plains of sand and a mysterious pyramid in the distance. When the dust clears all you’ve got is a bottle of water and the knowledge that you can cobble together primitive tools by collecting rocks and sticks. ![]()
